El Chico Municipality

San Cayetano

Because this plant was located in the ravine of the same name, substantial engineering work was necessary to build it: the river was re-channeled and a vault was built to support the walls and two patios where three hydraulic wheels with a power of 11 and 9 steam horses were installed. This place also had: carpentry workshop, forge, metals and ores essay, offices and a smelting workshop called San Juan as well as big stables to keep 40 horses used in the ore processing method. This place is private property and it can only be observed from the road.

San Francisco

San Francisco was one of the nine ore processing plants operating in 1864 within Mineral de El Chico; according to its dimensions and the architectonic vestiges that survive, we believe that it was basically used to grind mineral maybe processed latter at San Cayetano hacienda adjoining it. In this site we can observe the place used once to set the hydraulic wheel. Oddly enough there is a symbol of a cross on top of what it seems a maguey plant on top of one of the entrances, maybe alluding pulque a traditional alcoholic drink of miners. It is a private property that can be observed very well from the road.

San Diego

This place is located at the town entrance, it worked with a hydraulic wheel with an average power of 12 steam horses, and even when it was not one of the most important plants of the area, its size was considerable. Just one of its covered patios was 100 meters long and 20 meters wide. This plant also had storages, stables, calcination furnace, washing areas, house, and a beautiful orchard. Today we can visit this place and even stay there because its building is being used as hotel, unfortunately its reutilization did not consider the historical value and patrimonial legacy. At the higher part of the gardens a big water deposit still survives as only vestige of its productive activity.
